Why Video Will Help You Hire the Best Employees

Over the years we have produced many different types of videos. These could be promotional films for websites, shorter videos for social media distribution or explainer pieces to demonstrate a product a service. However, one of the most popular types of videos we have produced focus around staff culture with the aim of bringing new and emerging talent into an organisation.

So, why are these some of the most, if not the most, popular videos we produce? Surely businesses should be focussing on producing content that increases revenue, right?

Well, not always…

Following on from the pandemic, the employee landscape has changed dramatically across the majority of industries. Pre-2020, the rigid office-based 9-5 was very much a reality for a large chunk of the nation’s workforce, however that is now no longer the case. With so many individuals working from home several days per week, the playing field has levelled out in terms of what businesses can offer new starters - a pool table and drinks on a Thursday night aren’t going to cut the mustard with the majority of modern employees.

So, how does video make a difference?

I’m sure all of us have applied for a job at some point in our lives and are aware of the challenges that can come when finding a new employer. A job for me isn’t just a job, it’s somewhere that you spend the majority of your time and for that reason it needs to be a right fit for the individual. Video creates transparency and shows prospective candidates the individuals within a business, the staff culture and generally provides a feeling for if that organisation is the right place for them.

The challenge therein lies in making each video truly unique for the hiring business as a lot of office-based culture films have a tendency to fall into a similar narrative - ‘the autonomy is great’, ‘I love the people here’, ‘I’ve never worked anywhere like this’ etc. All of those are great one liners, but there needs to be more substance as to why somewhere is a great place to work.

When planning a video focussing on hiring new staff, you need to home in on your USPs - maybe you have a great graduate scheme, you’re a family operation than has grown tenfold, you could be doing something totally against the grain in your industry… Every business has a unique story to tell that can engage with prospective employees!

The video should hear from staff at all levels and not just senior management teams. You’ll want to showcase graduate or junior members, as well as individuals who have been promoted through the organisation and then directors and founders. This results in an overall well-rounded piece that will help any candidate, whether they be senior or junior, to decide if your company will be right for them.
